Music and Mental Health

According to British cultural theorist and philosopher Mark Fisher, music is a space in which we can recognize the main symptoms of cultural crisis. What kind of society does contemporary music production reflect? Neoliberal capitalism has resulted in a culture of retrospection and pastiche, depriving artists of the means to create something new.

Life has accelerated, but culture has slowed down. Is this due to the precariousness of work culture, which leaves people exhausted and overwhelmed by stimuli? Fisher often wrote about the relationship between capitalism and mental health, and these themes are part of many of his now cult music analyses. What made Fisher's writing about music unique, and how does it inspire contemporary music journalism?

Are musicians today more concerned with mental health issues thanks to Fisher? And is music today more of a therapy, or can it once again predict alternative futures and ignite the flame of political imagination?
