In March 2025, Goethe-Institut Korea hosted a five-day kick-off workshop for the regional project Solitude in Seoul, in collaboration with the Art Sonje Center. The workshop brought together 16 artists and curators, four experts and Goethe-Institut staff from the participating locations – including Almaty, Beijing, Berlin, Bishkek, Hong Kong, Kyoto, Seoul, Shanghai, Taipei, Tashkent, Tokyo, and Ulaanbaatar.

The aim of this initial meeting was to create a space for interdisciplinary exchange, creative thinking, and personal encounters. Through joint brainstorming sessions, bar camps and interactive formats, the participants were able to explore project ideas, develop synergies, and build new networks. The focus was not only on individual artistic practice, but also on collective reflection on social developments related to solitude – in both its voluntary and involuntary forms.

The workshop was accompanied by a varied program of lectures, physical exercises, and public events that highlighted different perspectives on the topic. Thought-provoking contributions included a book talk by author and activist Sarah Diehl, body-orientated exercises led by playwright and performer Cally Yu that encouraged participants to reflect on their personal experiences, and a lecture by political philosopher Kim Man-Kwon, which sparked discussions about loneliness in urban environments.

An internal session by Marek Tuszynski offered further theoretical depth to the discussion. The workshop concluded with a joint pitching session, where all participating artists and curators presented their project ideas. These proposals will serve as the basis for the next phase of the project and reflect the diversity and depth with which the theme of solitude is being explored. Go back to Stories
