Narges Kalhor was born in 1984 in Teheran, where she grew up. After gaining her university entrance qualification in 2001 she started studying feature film direction at the Teheran Film Academy, under well-known filmmakers such as Abbas Kiarostami. In 2009 Narges Kalhor attended the Nuremberg International Human Rights Film Festival (NIHRFF) in Nürnberg with her short film Die Egge. After her appearance at the festival, she had to apply for political asylum in Germany. In 2010 she began her studies at the Hochschule für Fernsehen und Film in Munich (HFF Munich). Her second film at the HFF, in the role of co-director, Shoot Me was nominated for the German short film prize and awarded the prize for best non-fiction film of 2014.

Narges Kalhor now works for diverse exhibitions and museums in the cinematic art sector. In 2014 she received the prize for the best video art for Kafan at the Underdox Film Festival in Munich, and exhibited the video installation Nosferatur Is Not Dead as a group work at the Lenbachhaus in Munich in 2016. Her third film at the HFF Gis was nominated for the Starter Film Prize of the city of Munich. In 2019 her graduation film In the Name of Scheherazade or The First Beer Garden in Teheran celebrated its world premiere at the Vision Du Réel and was awarded the Goethe-Institut Prize for the best documentary film at the Dok-Leipzig Filmfestival. In 2019 Narges Kalhor received the Bavarian Cultural Prize and a year later, the Starter Film Prize of the city of Munich. In the Name of Scheherazade has been shown at numerous international festivals and in February 2020 received a Swiss cinema release via Cinélibre. The film was shown at the Berlinale Forum in Berlin in June 2021.
