Prof. Axel Sowa (Dipl.-Ing., studied architecture in Berlin and Paris) has been head of the Department of Architectural Theory at RWTH Aachen University since October 2007. He is also curator of the exhibition Material Flows in Osaka, organised by the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR), the German-French Cultural Fund, the Goethe Institute and the French Institute in Japan, which took place at the same time as the Expo. Before teaching at the universities of Saarbrücken and Aachen, he was editor-in-chief of the magazine L'Architecture d'Aujourd'hui in Paris from 2000 to 2007.
