The Demonstration of Capitalist Realism
The Demonstration of Capitalist Realism is a screening and symposium on September 12 and 13 addressing capitalist realism through both the specificities of its art-historical usage and a contemporary theorizing of capitalism and the “real.” It follows the recent exhibition Living with Pop. A Reproduction of Capitalist Realism which examined and articulated the term’s relevance to the social and cultural developments of the past fifty years, leading to its re-appearance in recent political and critical theory. Through a series of presentations from art historians, philosophers, and theorists ranging from close-readings of capitalist realism as employed by artists Manfred Kuttner, Konrad Lueg, Sigmar Polke, and Gerhard Richter, and later by the gallerist Rene Block, to considerations of the ontological shifts that have accompanied the ascendancy of neoliberal capitalism, the symposium will trace the movements between realism as artistic strategy and as mediated by pervasive ideology.
