The 2011 Goethe-Institut Documentary Film Prize goes to "Peak" by Hannes Lang
Peak by Hannes Lang (Germany, Italy)
Synopsis
Director Hannes Lang chose to make the destruction of nature and homeland the subject of his documentary film “Peak”. A South Tyrolean, Lang presents a sober and often sobering stocktake of the Alpine region.Jury statement
The 2011 Goethe-Institut Documentary Film Prize goes to “Peak”, a film by Hannes Lang. The film features stunning visual imagery which finds suitable aesthetic expression in the Cinemascope format. The universal theme of humankind’s destruction of nature is impressively communicated to the spectator. The film achieves this, without any judgemental commentary, merely by presenting images of industrial interventions into a centuries-old cultural landscape. The systematic destruction of nature in the Alpine region and the loss of homeland constitutes a radical break from the expectations associated with the traditional Heimatfilm genre.
