Bettina Meyer was born in 1968 in Hamburg. Studied stage design at the College of the Arts in Berlin (today the University of the Arts). From 1994 to 1996, she worked as an assistant at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg under the head of the stage design Anna Viebrock, where she designed her first sets. Since then she has worked freelance both in opera and theatre productions at, among others, the Nationaltheater Weimar, the Nationaltheater Mannheim, the Theater Neurmarkt in Zurich, the Schauspielhaus Zurich, the Staatsoper unter den Linden, the Innsbrucker Festwochen for Early Music, the Munich Biennale, the Zürcher and Salzburg Festivals and time and again for the Theater Basel. From 1999 to 2001, she was in-house stage designer at the Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz in Berlin. Recently she has worked regularly at the Deutsche Theater Berlin and the Bayerisches Staatsschauspiel. She has just completed her first stage design for the Burgtheater in Vienna. Since 1996, she has collaborated on a steady basis with the director Barbara Frey (in 2004 she was invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen with the Bayerisches Staatsschauspiel production of Uncle Vanya. She also collaborates with other directors, including Stefan Bachmann, Ruedi Häusermann and Christoph Marthaler. She lives with her boyfriend and their two daughters in Berlin.
