A1 des GeR (Level A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR))

Level A1 is the first (“breakthrough”) level of the six-level Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) for assessing foreign language skills. The CEFR describes what a learner should be able to do in speaking, listening and writing at each of the levels. The examination for the Goethe-Zertifikat: A1 Start Deutsch 1 corresponds to the first level of the CEFR (“Basic User” – A1). This certificate provides the evidence of German language proficiency that spouses wishing to join their husbands or wives in Germany need in order to obtain a residence permit.
