Diversity

In Germany, the term “diversity” is used to describe a concept which has come to the fore since the 1990s, which sees a diverse society as a valuable attribute and promotes a climate of openness, acceptance and recognition of others, including those who are different.

In an educational context, a commitment to diversity implies that efforts are being made to empower people to take responsibility for dismantling stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination.

The term is increasingly encountered in workplace settings and in an administrative context as well. Here, “diversity management” describes a principle of corporate governance based on the understanding that diversity offers potential for business success. The German Diversity Charter initiative is committed to mainstreaming diversity in the German economy. Since it was founded in March 2007, more than 1100 companies and institutions, including the Goethe-Institut, have signed the Charter and signalled their support for the recognition of diversity in German corporate culture.
