Zusatzqualifizierung für Lehrkräfte in Integrationskursen (Additional qualification for teachers on integration courses)

The qualification required to teach on integration courses is a university degree in the subject of German as a foreign language or German as a second language. Teachers with other degrees may only teach on the integration courses if they obtain an additional teaching qualification approved by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees. This additional qualification for teachers on the integration courses can be acquired at the Goethe-Institut and a number of other training institutions. But the Goethe-Institut is not only one of the accredited training providers; it also developed the curriculum for the training scheme.

Since 2005, training for the additional qualification has been provided in two formats: a “full” form, comprising 140 teaching units, and a shortened form, comprising 70 teaching units. After completing the course, participants must compile a portfolio as evidence of the skills acquired.

The Goethe-Institut also offers teacher training in German as a second language at elementary and primary level, qualifying teachers to work with pre-school and primary school children.
