Centre for International Migration and Development (CIM)   deutschenglish

CIM places managers and technical experts in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Eastern and South Eastern Europe, and supports them with services and with subsidies to top up their local salaries. Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity   deutschenglish

The institute researches diversity in historical and modern societies, with particular focus on ethnic and religious processes. Its research is focused not only on migration-related contexts (in so-called countries of origin, transit and destination), but also on societies characterised by different types of diversity.

The Council of Migration is a nation-wide association of scientists focusing on migration and integration. Since 2000 it has published its biannual migration-report and since April 2007 the "Political Essays on Migration and Integration" which can be downloaded from the council's homepage.

The Center for Intercultural Studies (ZIS) is located at the Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz. The center's approximately 100 researchers in the humanities and social sciences study intercultural encounters and seek to bridge the gap between research on one hand and policy making and ethnic minorities on the other.

Centre for Multilingualism (ZMI) in Cologne   deutsch

The aim of the Centre for Multiculturalism and Integration (ZMI) is to improve language skills, with a particular focus on children and teenagers with a migration background and from socially disadvantaged families in the Cologne area. The Centre currently encompasses 44 initiatives, projects and institutions and promotes an exchange of knowledge, ideas and experience. ZMI aims to facilitate, coordinate, advise on and initiate interaction between projects and initiatives on language development, multilingualism and integration in Cologne. Its establishment reflects the belief that multilingualism offers new perspectives for society and that language learning should therefore be a goal for everyone.

What drives young Africans to search for a new life in Europe? How do they get there? And do their dreams come true? The 15-part "Destination Europe" series goes inside the real lives of African migrants and follows them from the moment they decide to leave their home to their experiences in Europe.

Researching with GrafStat: Teenagers caught between social exclusion and integration   deutsch

Which teenagers feel they have been socially excluded or disadvantaged, which feel more integrated? With the aid of this teaching program schoolchildren can examine the experiences their fellow classmates have been through at their school concerning exclusion and integration. This of course reveals just how difficult it is for young people from immigrant backgrounds to take part in school life. The team project “Researching with GrafStat” is being carried out by the University of Münster in collaboration with the bpb -Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung (Federal Agency for Civic Education). All the relevant information and materials are available free of charge online from the bpb website.

“History Remix” – An Audio Walk through Munich’s Migration History   deutschenglish

“History Remix” is an audio walk in the form of an audio play about migrant labour and its significance for the City of Munich, bringing together memories, photographic material, anecdotes and literature. The walk is available for download as a podcast to an MP3 player or mobile phone free of charge and lasts around 2.5 hours, taking the listener on a stroll through the city to sites of relevance to migration history.

The intercultural map is designed to depict Augsburg’s multi-ethnic population in a way that people can see and experience for themselves. The image and cultural life of the city is characterised by the multi-ethnic population structure, but the structure itself is often not immediately apparent to people.

Language Rich Europe Index – A European Index on Multilingual Policies and Practices   deutschenglish

With globalisation and increasing migration, multilingualism is critical to intercultural understanding and social cohesion, job prospects for individuals and competitiveness in Europe. Language Rich Europe conducts an analysis of policies and practices on multilingualism across 20 European countries and compares the results against European recommendations. With this analysis as a basis, Language Rich Europe will create a new and sustainable interdisciplinary network of over 1200 decision makers across Europe, who will be brought together to share knowledge and good practice in multilingualism.

MigMap – Governing Migration – Mapping European Politics on Migration   deutschenglish

MigMap provides a picture of how and where knowledge “production” currently takes place in the area of migration and who is participating and involved. It investigates how exactly the new forms of suprastate government, such as can be observed in the European migration regime, function.

The MAA is a (primarily internet-based) collection of narrated migration stories – 100 of them to start with. In this growing audio archive, migration stories, stories of migrants, biographies and migration history are "archived" and brought to life for the public.

Migrant Integration Policy Index (MIPEX)   english

The Migrant Integration Policy Index (MIPEX) is a reference guide and fully interactive tool to assess, compare and improve integration policy. It applies specific criteria to measure integration policies in all EU Member States and four other non-EU countries. Indicators include labour market access, family reunion, long-term residence, political participation, access to nationality, and anti-discrimination.

Stiftung Interkultur - International Gardens, Göttingen   deutsch

The people involved in the "International Gardens" are German and immigrant families and individuals with very different ethnic and cultural backgrounds and with different social milieus, ways of life and ages. Through organic gardening, craft work, language and literacy courses and self-designed environmental education work, the project members find new fields of activity and experience.

TRANSIT MIGRATION is a joint project by researchers, film makers, media activists and artists and is designed to be a multi-disciplinary research, film, sound and exhibition project. It researches the transformation of Europe through the movements of transnational migration beyond EU borders and questions the depictability/depiction of this reality in academic discourse, in the media and in art.

Culture

Ballhaus Naunynstraße   deutschenglish

Ballhaus Naunynstraße is a translocal theatre space which serves as a “crystallisation point” for artists from (post-) migrant communities and beyond, founded in 2008 by artistic director Shermin Langhoff with the support of Fatih Akin. The theatre has no ensemble of its own, but features familiar faces, names and attitudes in a constant search for innovation and a broadening of perspectives based on fractured and fragmented memories. This post-migrant theatre is more than just a temporary phenomenon: it is a permanent platform for experimentation, crossing and re-crossing the boundary between the aesthetic and the socio-cultural space. 

Documentation Centre and Museum of Migration in Germany e.V. (DOMiD e.V.)   deutsch

DOMiD e.V. was founded in 1990 by Turkish academics and others in order to document and preserve the history of migration from Turkey. Since 2002 DOMiD e.V. has been extending its activities to all immigrant groups from the former recruitment countries of the Federal Republic of Germany and countries that had signed treaties with the German Democratic Republic. This social and cultural history collection includes all kinds of documents and objects. The archive is open to the public.

“Lebenswege” (Life Paths) – The Rhineland-Palatinate Online Migration Museum   deutsch

This Online Museum invites the visitor to take a multimedia tour through the history of migration in Germany. Like history itself, the Museum – the first of its kind – is a living and ever-evolving process, which examines the issue of migration through the medium of permanent and temporary online exhibitions. “Lebenswege” combines history with a focus on young people with a migration background, whose knowledge, openness and understanding can contribute to fruitful intercultural dialogue. As well as numerous dossiers on the history of migration in Germany, “Lebensweg”e focuses on the personal experiences of migrants themselves, including many in the public eye. The website also provides information about integration policy, academic studies, campaigns, initiatives and media offers in Rhineland-Palatinate.
