Was the Arab Spring just a brief episode? What characterises the current period of transition? Have art and culture created a new “territory”? What role do art and culture now perform? How have artistic practices and the form of events changed? What expectations do people have of Arab artists and cultural figures at the present time? These questions are discussed by: Bahia Shehab, artist and art historian; Sofiane Ouissi, Tunisian choreographer, dancer and co-founder of the multi-disciplinary Dream City festival in Tunis; Johannes Ebert, secretary general of the Goethe-Institut.
The role of artists in contemporary Arab societies is also reflected in the seventh volume of the “Positions” series, which is edited by the Goethe-Institut and Academy of Arts Berlin, and will be published this autumn by Steidl-Verlag.
