The DIE is an independent research institute for continuing adult education. Its goal is to provide services for institutions and adult education, thereby improving personal development, participation in society and employability. The DIE combines adult-education research and practice with each other, provides data and information. Its research themes cover all areas of adult education: adult learning processes, didactic design of offers, personnel and the system of continuing education with its financial, political and legal aspects. In this context, the DIE also addresses current problems and topics.

The DIE offers a wide spectrum of services: publication series, the professional journals "Report" and "DIE Zeitschrift für Erwachsenenbildung" (i.e. DIE journal of adult education), statistical surveys on publically funded continuing education and a large-scale library. In addition, the Institute is both nationally and internationally networked. It represents German continuing education abroad and at the same time communicates international results to the German educational landscape.
