At the core of the GEI's work is international comparison of social images of self, other and enemy that are transmitted through textbooks and other school relevant educational media. Special emphasis is placed on fields such as history, geography and social studies/politics. Conference and workshop organization, providing expert assessments, materials, recommendations and evaluations, presentation of scientific findings at advanced and continuing education events, and scientific consultation for political institutions on education-relevant issues in Germany and internationally are among the GEI's central services and referral activities.

The Georg Eckert Institute's library contains a collection of international textbooks for the fields of history, geography, and social studies/politics as well as German that is unique. Together with a comprehensive collection of research literature, it creates ideal research conditions for scientists and scholars from a wide range of disciplines.
