Ecology and its interrelationships with economics and society are the institute's focal points. A further focal point is the analysis and induction of innovations for decoupling natural resource consumption and prosperity and economic growth, as well as sustainable production and consumption in a globalised world.

The Wuppertal Institute carries out application oriented research for policy makers, business and society and actively communicates its findings to its target groups. It receives basic financing from the State of North Rhine Westphalia and is a part of the Science Centre North Rhine Westphalia (Wissenschaftszentrums Nordrhein-Westfalen, WZN).
