The Arnold Bergstraesser Institute for Socio-Cultural Research (ABI) is an independent, non-profit public service research institute dedicated to comparative perspectives on social science analysis of the societies, cultures and policies of overseas nations (Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Near East).
Based on a synoptic approach deriving from Arnold Bergstraesser (Fribourg School of "synoptic political science"), the institute combines scientific basic research, applied research in the area of development cooperation, as well as training and advanced studies for managers and administrators, in research and practical work concerning and in cooperation with developing countries. Leading professors of political science from various universities are affiliated with the institute. Starting in 2008, the Arnold Bergstraesser Institute has been an affiliated institute of the University of Fribourg.
