The ZZF is an interdisciplinary institute for the study of German and European contemporary history. It cooperates with the universities in the Berlin-Brandenburg area as well as with research institutes abroad. The ZZF is currently dealing with the following themes: communism and society, economic and social change during the twentieth century, changing concepts of the political: rights, norms and semantics, regimes of the social sphere; mobilization, welfare state and rationalisation during the twentieth century, contemporary history of media and information societies.
The ZZF conveys its work to the public through a range of publications: the portal Zeitgeschichte-online (i.e. contemporary history online), the print series "Zeithistorische Forschungen" (i.e. research in contemporary history), and the series "Geschichte der Gegenwart" (i.e. contemporary history), as of 2010. The publications are also being supplemented by the ZZF almanac ZeitRäume (i.e. time periods).
The ZZF has been a member of the Leibniz Association (WGL) since 2009, and is financed by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG) and by the State of Brandenburg.
