Educational and developmental/lifespan processes from childhood through advanced age, institutionalised learning and human decision making behaviour are among the research themes of the Max Planck Institute for Human Development. The institute's four research areas are lifespan psychology, education science and education systems, the history of emotions and adaptive behaviour and cognition, such as human risk-taking behaviour. The influence of evolutionary, social, historical and institutional contexts on the life journey of the individual is also studied here. The institute cooperates on national and international levels with external research institutes in interdisciplinary research institutions.
The institute is one of a total of 80 institutes financed by the Max Planck Society (Max-Planck-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Wissenschaften e.V.); the German Federal Government and the 16 states provide basic financing.
