IKKM Weimar The Internationales Kolleg für Kulturtechnikforschung und Medienphilosophie (IKKM) studies the relationship between human beings and things in the technologised media culture of the 20th and 21st centuries. It functions on the basis of the fellow principle: each semester, ten experts from Germany and internationally come to the institute to work together. They share the assumption that technology must not be understood merely as a tool of modern life, but as an active agent in its own right that constitutively intervenes in cultural processes. The focus of the institute's work is therefore on the application and further development of current theoretical approaches, such as the "Agency Theory", i.e. the "Actor Network Theory".

The IKKM will be initially sponsored (through 2014) by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Each year concludes with a major conference on the the year's particular theme.
