The Max Weber Center for Advanced Cultural and Social Studies is a faculty-like central institution for research and teaching of the University of Erfurt. It is composed of an Institute for Advanced Study and a post-graduate programme. Its focal areas are religion, science and law as powers of interpretation and governance, interactions among cultures, social orderings and mentalities in radical change, normative, in particular ethical issues. It functions according to the fellow principle: internationally recognised researchers from a diversity of disciplines are made temporary members. The Max Weber Center is financed by budgetary means of the state Thuringia and by third party funds.
