The Leibniz Institute for Regional Development and Structural Planning (IRS) studies the transformation and administration of cities and regions from social science based micro- and macro-perspectives in interdisciplinary teams and long-range core research areas. It is organised into the following research departments: regionalisation and economic spaces, regional institutional change, knowledge milieus and spatial structures, and regeneration in shrinking cities and towns. It also has a comprehensive collection of documents on the GDR's planning and construction history.
As a trans-regional research institute, the IRS is jointly funded by the Federal Government and the State of Brandenburg. It is a member of the Leibniz Association.
