The IWH is the only economic research institute in East Germany. It conducts research on transformation-based economic characteristics as well as the ongoing process of economic integration in Europe. In addition, the IWH develops well-founded contributions to current economic policy in cooperation with numerous university and extra-university research institutions in Germany and abroad.
For instance, the IWH is a member of the project group Joint Economic Forecasting, which semi-annually puts together reports on the current status of the global economy and the German economy for the German government; in addition, it is part of a European research consortium for analysing the economic catching-up processes in Central and Eastern Europe (EU's Seventh Framework Programme).
The IWH has a structured programme for promoting young economics talents. As a member of the Leibniz Society, the IWH is funded by the federal government and the German Länder.
