Samira, 29, havingwitnessedfailure and hypocrisy in relationships, no longer believes in romantic marriage. The novel tells her story in three key stages. The single woman shows her family life shattered by her parents' separation, where she sees her two sisters become teenage mothers. The ‘Célibattante’ shows her years of struggle to exist outside of marriage, between romantic hopes and sentimental disillusionment. And finally,the‘Célibattue’ recounts her relationship with a polygamous man whom she chooses to marry as his second wife despite her doubts, torn between passion and reason. Since she no longer hopes to find ayoung, unmarriedman after the age of 30.
