Join us for a captivating series of screenings and discussions that delve into the complexities of identity, belonging, and personal freedom. Featuring three thought-provoking films, this series promises to spark meaningful conversations and reflections. The series continues with the screening of Precious Ivie, which will be followed by a discussion with Olga Kourelou, film academic, and Serap Kanay, artist and social commentator.

Afro-German Ivie, called “Brownie” by her friends, lives in Leipzig with her best friend Anne. She works temporarily in her ex-boyfriend Ingo's solarium, while she is still looking for a permanent job as a teacher. Suddenly, her Berlin half-sister Naomi - a stranger to her until then - appears on her doorstep and confronts her with the death of their father and his upcoming funeral in Senegal. As the sisters slowly get to know each other, Ivie increasingly questions not only her nickname but also her self-image.

EXPERTS

Olga Kourelou

Olga Kourelou holds PhD in Film Studies from King’s College London. Having held teaching positions at King’s College London and Sussex University, she is now Research Fellow at the University of Nicosia and an independent film curator. She served as a member of the Cyprus Cinema Advisory Committee and has now been appointed to the Subcommittee for Script Evaluation.
Olga’s research interests are in star studies, gender, race, and European cinema, with a particular focus on Greek-language film. She has contributed book chapters and articles to publications including New Cinemas: Journal of Contemporary Film, Journal of Greek Media and Culture and Celebrity Studies Journal.  

Serap Kanay

Serap Kanay is a freelance artist, social commentator, and a Tourist Guide from Famagusta, Cyprus. She is interested in the telling and the archival of alternative “hi/stories”; Herstory through art. Memory, gender, oral history, African Cypriot heritage and trauma are her prime research areas. Her main form of expression is Installations where she employs the use of sound, text, textiles, photographs and video as medium.

The artist has been avidly researching Afro Cypriot Heritage since Mid 1990’s. Her work on this has been included in several theses. Taking ‘Personal is Political’ as her motto she believes an artist’s life is her work and records everyday concerns and beauty and presents them in different art forms pointing to their universality.
