Goethe Excellence Scholarship

As the cultural arm of the German federal government, the Goethe-Institut is delighted to introduce the Goethe Excellence Scholarship for university students in Hong Kong. The scholarship not only aims to support German-learning students at local universities in their study, but also to reinforce cooperation among higher education institutions in Hong Kong. 

By receiving the scholarship, the 2 winners can participate in a 2 to 3-week German language programme at the Goethe-Instituts in Germany in 2026, including accommodation, transportation, and all necessary expenses. Become a winner and explore one of 12 vibrant German cities!

What does the Scholarship offer

The Goethe-Institut will offer scholarship to the 2 winning students to participate in a 2 to 3-week German language course with cultural programmes at one of the 12 Goethe-Institutes in Germany in 2026. Students can choose freely their programme at any location they prefer during any available course periods throughout the year.


Please find your preferred course schedule and location in the document below:

Under the framework of the scholarship, the Goethe-Institut Hongkong will cover:
  • Course fee for Deutsch Intensiv (Kompakt) programme at Goethe-Institut Germany
  • Travel allowance (approx. 1200 EUR)
  • Accommodation allowance (approx. 700 EUR) or arranged by the Goethe-Institut*
  • Living expenses and meal allowance
  • Medical and accidental emergency insurance
*Subject to availability at the Goethe-Institut Germany, only available in Berlin, Munich, Dresden, Freiburg, and Schwäbisch Hall.
 

Application Requirments

To apply for the Goethe Excellence Scholarship, you must be:
  1. a currently enrolled full-time student at any recognised higher education institutions* in Hong Kong,
  2. enrolled into any German language courses at the unversity during your studies, or studying German as your major/ minor,
  3. at least 18 years old by 2026, and 
  4. a non-German native speaker and without any German family heritage.

Vorgehen Stipendien

 

To prepare for your application, please have the following documents ready and tasks completed before submitting them to the Application Portal. Please note that the application deadline is March 15, 2026.

  1. Academic Transcript
  2. CV/Resume in DIN-A4 format
  3. Reference Letter from a German teacher at your university (in German)*
  4. Personal Statement (in German)*
  5. Video Presentation (in German)*
Please ensure the completeness of your documents before submission, as it will affect your application.

*Please adhere to the requirements for these documents/tasks as stated below.

How should I prepare:


As part of your application, you are asked to submit a video presentation in German. In this video, please introduce yourself and talk about the topic "Hürde überwinden".

As a guideline for your presentation, you could include the following points:

 
  • Erzählen Sie von einer persönlichen Herausforderung im letzten Jahr, die Sie überwunden haben.

  • Wie haben Sie die Herausforderung gemeistert?

  • Wer oder was hat Ihnen geholfen?

  • Was haben Sie aus dieser Erfahrung gelernt?


Including some video editing or visual elements would be a plus for your presentation. Please note that the video should not exceed 5 minutes in total and should be entirely in German.


If you are selected as one of the winners, your video will be published on the channels of the Goethe-Institut.


You are asked to submit a reference letter (Empfehlungsschreiben) by a German teacher from your university. Please kindly refer to the template below for teacher use.

 


The copy of the reference letter should be submitted digitally via the Application Portal.


Please explain your motivation for applying and why you would like to visit your chosen course location in Germany. (max. 250 words in German)

Your personal statement should be submitted in the text field provided on the Application Portal.
