In 1812, Jacob Grimm and Wilhelm Grimm published the first volume of their collection of “Children’s and Household Tales” (commonly referred to “Grimm’s Fairy Tales”. Although the brother Grimms didn’t invent “Fairy Tale” as a literary genre, nor did they create/write any of the stories, their publications were very important in the sense that they gathered stories from peasants, villagers, and different classes of people. Without their efforts, many German folk stories might have been lost. They gave these tales written form, which allowed them to spread widely and become part of global culture.

In May and June, the library of Goethe-Institut Hongkong will present a collection of fairy tales from Germany. Besides, the Goethe-Institut has adapted and simplified twelve of the most popular Grimm’s fairy tales especially for German learners. Visitors are welcome to take a copy home! Last but not the least, there is also a good collection of fairy tales films available on ARD's media center.
