Creative Hubs Grants

Yemen Creative Hubs is an EU-funded project that supports civil society organisations and individual cultural practitioners in Yemen and the Yemeni diaspora. Launched in April 2022 and led by the Goethe-Institut, along with five consortium partners: Aden Again Cultural Foundation, Basement Cultural Foundation, Madarat, Yemen Art Base, and Your ECHO. The project aims to enhance the skills of artists and organisations, while promoting social cohesion and peace-building in Yemen, despite the severe ongoing humanitarian crisis.

In December 2022, 45 grants were awarded to cultural practitioners and organisations across Yemen. These grants supported a variety of projects, including films, exhibitions, writing projects, training workshops, photography, podcasts, handicrafts productions, online campaigns, performative arts and music.

Exhibition

  • Different

    "Different" is an art exhibition that encompasses various art forms by integrating works of drawing, photography, calligraphy, digital art, and design depicting the same scene. The artworks revolve around the details of the city of Aden, including landmarks, popular life, customs, and traditions.

  • The Forty Rules of war

    The project aims to establish an art exhibition inspired by the essence of the Sufi novel "The Forty Rules of Love." It carries a noble, humanitarian, and artistic message that speaks to the human spirit, promoting peace and goodwill towards others, especially diverse groups. The exhibition will be named "The Forty Rules of War" as a reinterpretation of themes from the novel. Given the widespread popularity of the novel among Yemenis and intellectuals, the exhibition's concept will focus on reimagining its ideas through artistic paintings that convey messages of artistic peace, not limited to any specific community or country, but open to all times and places.

  • Taht Al-Shams (Under the sun)

    The project named "Under the Sun" features 30 paintings that delve into fears and psychological complexities. Its aim is to confront these aspects, guiding viewers towards inner peace. The artworks were exhibited at Sana'a Creative Hub and showcased on Instagram as well.

Film

  • Women at Sea - نساء في البحر

    The short documentary "Women at Sea" sheds a light on the everyday life of a fisherwoman and how she fights and struggles besides her diseases in order to earn a basic income for herself and her family.

  • Turn it back to us

    The film tells the story of the importance of the Adeni dialect as an Arabic cultural heritage. It portrays a Yemeni writer who resides in Aden and has written a specialized linguistic dictionary containing vocabulary rooted in the Arabic language and the language of the Quran. While many Yemeni society members, especially Adenis, consider it just a dialect like other dialects that emerged due to the fusion of Arabic culture with foreign cultures such as Indian, Somali, and English, Professor Amin Shamsan dedicated 15 years of research and collection of vocabulary, ensuring their sources, to create the first linguistic dictionary and a reference for Adeni words and vocabulary that have been passed down through generations.

  • The comic puppet theater films

    The project involves creating films for comedic puppet theater that addresses important and diverse issues such as girls' educational empowerment and reproductive health, presenting them to the community in a unique and engaging way through puppetry. It shall contribute to raising awareness about gender equality within the community through comedic puppet theater videos.

  • Hamat Al-Fann Al-Yemeni

    Hamat Al-Fann Al-Yemeni (The Pillars of Yemeni Art) is a series of short animated episodes in the form of stories that depict the lives of some of the most known Yemeni artists, such as Faisal Alawi, Mohammed Saad, Abu Bakr Salem, Ayoub Tarsh, and Ali Abdullah Al-Sammah. These artists have played a significant role in shaping Yemeni art. The project includes a marketing campaign on social media platforms and the production of five episodes within the project duration.

  • Baraa

    The film addresses the psychological effects of war on children. The protagonist being a child himself shall allow a young audience to identify with the protagonist and learn about strategies to strengthen mental health.

  • A Piece of Me

    The production of  the documentary film "A Piece of Me" aims to document heritage, enhance cultural and heritage identity among youth, promote values of peace, tolerance, and coexistence, and highlight the role of the older generation in preserving and revitalizing heritage. The film focuses on the central figure and protagonist, Uncle Ahmed Al-Ammari, an avid collector and enthusiast of heritage artifacts, presenting him in a modern and contemporary manner.The film aims to document the cultural and heritage identity of Hadhramaut, capturing its values of simplicity, peace, and the reflection of proactive actions and practices. Additionally, it serves as an invitation to the youth to embrace cultural and heritage initiatives that support the preservation of heritage, history, and its global dissemination.

    A Piece of Me - قطعة مني

  • Aden Narrates

    Aden Narrrates is a documentary film about Aden, The documentary tells the story of coexistence in the city of Aden, particularly in the neighbourhood of Al-Binjsar in At-Tawahi, highlighting the presence of a church next to a mosque and how Aden brought together people of different religions and sects. In addition, a social media page serves as platform to share stories about the ancient Aden, as a prelude to the main film project.

Mural

  • Aber

    The project involves wall murals depicting six Yemeni kings who played significant roles in ancient Yemen's prosperity, their stories becoming enduring legends. Known for their wisdom, strength, consultation, courage, and love for their homeland, these kings represent Yemen's historical richness.

    The murals aim to showcase the ancient beauty of Yemen through digital drawings of these six kings.

  • Mural Art

    The project consists of  a workshop for a group of talented individuals that will  teach them in mural painting. A series of sketches for the mural will be designed. Afterwards, the mural will be executed on a large scale, approximately 2 x 5 meters, using various techniques. The mural focusses on the history and culture of the region, specifically highlighting the tribes, civilizations, and myths of Shabwa, as well as the significance of the Hamath Center as the third center of the Yemeni kingdoms and the airport or any chosen location by the local council. This mural will be placed in the governorate or cultural center.

    The objectives of the project revolve around implementing the mural to showcase the history and culture of the governorate, and to encourage youth to engage in artistic practices. Since there is minimal interest in the arts in the region, this project aims to raise awareness, stimulate artistic discussions and dialogues, and produce more artistic works. Additionally, this mural will have an aesthetic impact on the vacant spaces in the governorate, adding a touch of beauty and enhancing the executive unity, artistic discussions, and dialogues in the community.

Music

  • TARABIAN

    Tarabian is a project that aims at integrating Eastern and Western musical traditions into a new musical fusion. The idea originated in the mind of the artist as he sings in multiple languages, including English and Arabic. He was inspired to sing in English with an Eastern musical style and also introduced "Mawwal" in his own Eastern style for the first time in an English song. The "Tarabian" project will be a continuous series of musical works, blending a new vocal and musical color. It starts with the first song "Born Again" as the first step of this musical journey.

  • My Art My Profession

    Mit diesem Projekt wurde die erste Frauen-Musikband in Aden gegründet. 
    Aus 80 Bewerber*innen wurden 13 Musikerinnen ausgewählt. Sie absolvierten ein mehrmonatiges Training zum Spielen von Musikinstrumenten und im gemeinsamen Musizieren. 

Online-Kampagne

  • Identity

    Die Online-Kampagne "Identität" zielt darauf ab, das gesellschaftliche Bewusstsein für die Erhaltung des architektonischen kulturellen Erbes zu schärfen. Die Kampagne bereitet Fakten und Wissenswertes rund um das Thema Architektur so auf, dass vor allem das Interesse von Studierenden und Hochschulabsolvent*innen geweckt wird. Darüber hinaus wird ein Dialog-Workshop durchgeführt, um die Bedeutung des antiken architektonischen Erbes im Jemen und seine Integration in die zeitgenössische Baukunst zu diskutieren.

  • Hubwa

    "Hubwa" ist eine Online-Kampagne, die sich an Kunst- und Kulturschaffende in der Region Hadhramaut richtet. Diese können im Rahmen einer Online-Kampagne ihre Arbeiten in den Bereichen Malerei, Literatur, Theater, Bildhauerei sowie Fotografie und Film einem breiten Publikum vorstellen und gleichzeitig archivieren.

    This audio blog tells the stories of exceptional Yemeni women who have had unique experiences. It is dedicated to echoing the extraordinary journeys of these remarkable individuals, illuminating their individual experiences and shining a spotlight on their untold stories.

    These narratives are meant to inspire, empower, and captivate audiences, showcasing a symphony of resilience and strength. The women featured are exceptional because they faced extraordinary challenges and, instead of breaking, they created their own opportunities, building success stories from adversity.

  • Documenting endangered oral heritage

    The project focuses on documenting, preserving, and promoting oral heritage to enhance cultural content on radio and social media platforms.
    The project aims to revive Yemen’s rural oral heritage through radio platforms and social media over a period of four months. Three radio episodes will be produced and broadcast, focusing on Yemen's endangered oral heritage, such as agricultural proverbs and traditional wisdom from various governorates. These include traditional stories from Taiz Governorate and religious chants from Raymah Governorate.
     

  • Yemen’s Iconic Podcast

    The project aims to train ten young students in creating podcasts to establish their own podcast episodes. Following the training, participants will create podcast episodes under the general theme “The Bright Side of Yemen”. Targeted group: young students between the age of 18 and 30. 

    The impact of the project will be introducing the bright side of Yemen and the Yemeni culture to the world in a unique way. Moreover, the project participants will learn new skills that will allow them to illustrate Yemeni culture by using modern methods. Furthermore, this project will elevate how Yemeni people convey messages about their thoughts and beliefs.

  • Hudhud

    In the city of Saba there is a connection between the hoopoe bird and Yemeni civilization. Throughout history, the hoopoe bird became a messenger, transmitting sties to the whole population.Today, the hoopoe continues to engage in the same activities as its ancestors, conveying stories and issues related to youth and women, and discussing their role in peacebuilding and nation-building. Through podcast episodes, the hoopoe will address issues concerning the mentioned groups and contribute to showcasing their experiences and transmitting them to the world.In the podcast episodes, the hoopoe will speak about various issues and narrate stories of active youth who revive cultural heritage. This will contribute effectively to raise cultural awareness, increase knowledge, and share inspiring stories among the target audience.The first season consists of four episodes, each episode will tell a story of a protagonist who successfully revives cultural heritage.

  • OudCast

    Artistic podcast episodes will explore prominent Yemeni artistic figures, turning them into role models for emerging artists in the Yemeni art scene. The project aims to contribute to the promotion and dissemination of Yemeni music, while also reviving Yemen's artistic heritage and allowing young artists to learn from it.

Training

  • Sign & Colour

    Teaching young individuals with disabilities the basics of drawing, cubist art, and calligraphy, as well as creating safe spaces for children with disabilities.

    The project integrates deaf persons and persons with disabilities, in total 80 children and 20 youth. 

    The training shall provide them with a safe space to express themselves through a workshop called "Sign and Color." The workshop aims to teach the basics of drawing, including various techniques and the integration of primary colors.

  • Traditional Crafts

    The project aims to implement two training workshops for a group of 14 women, lasting for 10 days, in the field of traditional crafts such as making incense burners, carpets, straw hats, and water jars. It also includes training in marketing. The project's outputs includes the production of handicrafts by the participants during the training period. Additionally, a documentary film will be produced, documenting the training workshops and showcasing the project's details, including interviews with representatives from governmental, union, and civil organizations in the field of traditional crafts. The film will be shared on social media platforms, with the aim of attracting the attention of civil society organizations and local authorities to these crafts, encouraging their support and the development of plans and programs that promote the revival of this heritage as a source of income for impoverished families.The project aims to enhance the capacities and skills of women with limited income in the fields of traditional handicrafts and marketing, contributing to the revival of cultural heritage by highlighting traditional crafts.

  • Colorful Fingers

    Colorful Fingers, a storytelling and drawing workshop for children, consisting of storytelling sessions featuring two legends from ancient Yemeni folklore, followed by a drawing workshop where children can bring these legends to life from their own perspective.

    The workshop aims to empower children as artists, allowing them to engage in the artistic field, expand their imagination, and introduce them to the intangible heritage of their country.

  • Tayf

    A competition was held for children aged 10 to 16 residing in Hadhramaut Governorate. Participants created short vlogs (video clips) lasting up to 5 minutes that showcased their daily lives in the governorate. The goal was to encourage the culture of visual blogging (vlogging) among young people.

  • Almuathrarin - Influential

    The project will train 15 creative men and women in the city of Aden, and will actively participate in promoting awareness of the importance of social peace in order to build a prosperous and secure country, and will contribute to amplifying the voice of youth to influence decision-makers and various societal groups.
    The participants afterwards decided through which media they wanted to express and address peace and social cohesion. 
    Podcasts, videos and paper magazines were produced.

  • Tanafas-Art Therapy

    The project is an interactive art therapy workshop for artists. It aims to highlight the contribution of arts in the potential healing and improvement of mental health. The project utilises artistic and applied practices in group therapy sessions, where artistic expression becomes a vital medium for individuals to express and release their conflicts and issues. Raising awareness about psychological therapy methods and their importance, fostering communication with participants, and providing a means of expression and catharsis through art therapy.

  • ARTOT

    The project is a two-month professional training course for 120 teachers of art education in public and private schools. 30 of them will be trained to attend the headquarters of the Arab Arts Forum, while the other 90 will be targeted by ten governorates and trained remotely.
    Many teachers lack experience in the academic aspects of drawing and how to incentive children in expressing themselves through art.
    The Arab Art Forum is an artistic edifice concerned with various artistic aspects. The forum was founded on January 1, 2013 by the plastic artist Radfan Al-Mohammadi, and since that time until now the forum has implemented many cultural and artistic events, training courses and workshops that have contributed and significantly contribute to the flourishing of art and artists. Because it has a major role in developing the level and experiences of the participants in order to convey it to the world.

  • Green Art

    The project Green Art as a local activity activates the role of women in sensing the importance of protecting the environment by using natural products to produce artwork. 

    Green Art targets a total of 39 female artists, 13 in each of the directorates (Seiyun Shibam Al-Qattan) for a period of 20 hours. 
    Training content is the production of artwork by using materials from the surrounding environment (e.g. seeds, leaves, clay). These materials are not only environmentally friendly but have also a long history of usage in the local culture. A women's artistic and cultural forum focused on visual and plastic arts as well as heritage culture, the forum aims to create a cultural and artistic environment that contributes to enhancing creativity, supporting female artists, and encouraging artistic and heritage expression in the community.

  • The Maritime Heritage Documentation

    The project involves conducting training courses for 30 young fishermen in the field of compass navigation and celestial navigation. These practical training sessions aim to transfer life experiences and document the compass system (Al-Deerah) and star tracking techniques. The participants will be encouraged to share their knowledge with their peers through a series of three-month courses. Additionally, a booklet will be created, containing comprehensive information about the compass system, star tracking in navigation, and maritime safety measures. This initiative aims to preserve the legacy of compass navigation and star tracking among young fishermen.

Writing

  • Farah - the triad of death, poverty, disease and war

    The novel  "Farah" is about war, diseases, and poverty that occur in Yemen. The events of the novel revolve around two main characters, a nurse and a doctor. The novel consists of 13 chapters, and its words and sentences emerged from the depths of the suffering that Yemeni citizens have endured. It discusses and describes the trinity of death in Yemen (diseases, poverty, and war). The novel raises many issues and questions which occupy the minds of its citizens today. The most important of these is why there is war and why people die without reasons. Why has Yemen specifically suffered from this trinity and why can't citizens protect themselves from diseases or safeguard their families and loved ones from epidemics?

  • Qantara Project

    Qantara, meaning the small bridge on the stream shall build bridges between the arts. 30 writers and artists from three governorates are trained on the production of awareness texts and visuals and how to effectively deliver messages of peace and social cohesion.

  • Wa la kalema

    Wa la kalema is a a comic book anthology that tackles issues of girls' education in Aden using the silent comic style to advocate for girls' education issues and empowering female artists to enter the workforce.

  • Time capsule

    The exciting book "Time Capsule" features 10 articles written by ten young Yemeni authors, with the introduction prepared by the project manager. Each article presents a positive vision for Yemen in 2050, exploring various aspects of society, culture, and development. This literary collection has been published outside Yemen and is available for purchase online.

    The articles in this book offer diverse perspectives on the future of Yemen, with each author creatively painting a bright future from their unique viewpoint. Each writer reflects their distinctive vision and broad imagination, contributing to an inspiring and positive outlook for the country's future.

  • Raiboon

    "Raiboon" is a children's illustrated magazine to promote Yemeni identity among the children and cultivate an informed generation.

  • Majaz

    This project aims to create a space for intellectual and cultural issues that support peace and gender equality by establishing an electronic platform called "Majaz." This platform will provide informative and artistic content about Yemen, different from prevailing coverage characterized by language filled with hatred and influenced by biased narratives resulting from conflicts. The platform will primarily focus on engaging storytelling about prominent female figures, shedding light on artists and cultural activists who strive to overcome challenging circumstances and build a pathway to life and engagement with other societies in various civilizational fields. This will be achieved through the use of modern media tools and a variety of written, visual, and graphic materials.

  • Sadah Mahbobah

    Popular and traditional games in Yemen are in danger to be forgotten and to disappear completely due to the expansion of technology, apps on cell phones that  separate children from reality and shrinking opportunities to meet children in public spaces due to the ongoing sever humanitarian situation. 
    Sada Mahboba collects and documents traditional games from Hadhramout and sets incentives for children and their parents to start playing traditional games and engage with others. 

    Sada Mahboba contributes to the documentation of cultural heritage and strengthens the social cohesion at the same time. 
    The Hadhramaut Foundation for Culture adopts a concept of culture as a system of knowledge, cultural heritage, literature, arts, and ethics, within a national and humanitarian cultural framework that preserves the values established by literature and the arts. 

    In its first phase, the foundation focuses on literature, including poetry, prose, and criticism; music, including composition, arrangement, performance, and singing; and theater, including writing, directing, and acting. After that, it will expand into other fields.

  • Soft Hands

    The project Soft Hands is a photography project that aims to shed light on female business leaders and project owners, highlighting the role of Yemeni women and female entrepreneurs in society.

  • Mukalla Comedy Club

    The opening of Mukalla Comedy Club in Mukalla brought together a vibrant crowd in a lively atmosphere. Laughter filled the hall as young Yemeni comedians entertained the audience for hours on stage. In a city where live comedy events are rare, this initiative introduced a new form of art and theater in Yemen, specifically in Mukalla. The event marked a significant cultural addition, resonating with enthusiastic applause and calls for encores, reflecting a growing appreciation for comedic expression in the region.

  • Qamariyat

    The Cultural Heritage Revival Project during Ramadan and throughout the year aims to revive cultural heritage by utilizing "Qamariyat" (traditional Yemeni moon-shaped lanterns). The project aims to encourage and revive cultural heritage and enhance the Yemeni community's appreciation for Qamariyat as a cultural symbol and a significant feature of Yemeni architectural design. Additionally, the project aims to support artisans and young individuals working in the field of Qamariyat craftsmanship.

  • Hadramout Kid Vlogger

    A competition was held for children aged 10 to 16 residing in Hadhramaut Governorate.
