Saskia Noor van Imhoff (b. 1982, Mission, Canada) is a visual artist based in Amsterdam and Mirns, the Netherlands. She studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and De Ateliers, Amsterdam. She was awarded the 2017 ABN Amro ArtPrize, the 2017 Prix de Rome. She has exhibited at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Centre Georges Pompidou, and the Gwangju and Moscow Biennials, with solo shows at Grimm Gallery. She is co-founder of REST, an artistic research foundation.
Through installations, architectural interventions, sculptures, and photography, Saskia Noor van Imhoff examines historical and contemporary materials, systems, hierarchical structures, value systems, and ideas about collecting.
Recently she turned her attention to a historic rural farmland in the Dutch countryside, which she defines as an ‘organic collection’. Components from the land are cultivated and combined, referencing ‘grafting’, a botanical technique to propagate plants, as a metaphor for the land’s progress.
At Villa Kamogawa, she turns to forests planted for timber production and pruned to continuously yield new shoots, later abandoned and grown unchecked into dense monocultures with little biodiversity — a tension between human control and unmanaged nature that forms her starting point for new work.
