Tmnit Ghide is a sound artist, researcher, and cultural worker with Eritrean roots.
She was born in southern Germany, studied International Development in Vienna, and currently lives in Berlin. In her practice, she understands sound as a socio-political archive and uses it as a central medium. She also works as a radio host and DJ.
She is a co-founder of the platform ALVOZAY (2020), which has produced two festivals in Berlin. In 2022, ALVOZAY was nominated by the Association of Independent Music Companies (VUT) in the category “Best New Music Business.” In 2020, she co-directed the ARTE documentary Square Ebow, which explores safe spaces in club culture. In 2022, she collaborated with the Meydan Festival as part of documenta fifteen. At the KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin, she presented a sonic-poetic exploration of collective working methods in 2023. In 2024, she participated in the Music Ambassador Program in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and contributed to the local Video Art Festival. She is currently a fellow of the Kültüřgemma Program in Vienna, where she is working on an archive of Black music creators.
During her residency in Kyoto, Ghide will research listening culture in Japan, particularly in Jazz Cafés. She will explore how listening practices in Japan will function as forms of collective cultural memory and relate them to sound traditions from East Africa.
