Author
Ulli Lust
Ulli Lust, born in 1967, emigrated from Vienna to Berlin in 1995. Since then, she has been creating comic reportages with sharp observations of modern everyday life, such as her depiction of a Berlin shopping mall inFashionvictims, Trendverächter – Comicreportagen aus Berlin(avant-verlag, 2008). In autumn 2009, she published an extensive comic about her youth, blending travelogue and picaresque novel with an existential teenage drama: Heute ist der letzte Tag vom Rest deines Lebens (avant-verlag). The book was translated into several languages and received numerous awards, including the Prix de Révélation at the Angoulême Comics Festival, the Ignatz Award, and the LA Times Book Award in the USA.
In 2013, Flughunde was published by Suhrkamp, a comic adaptation of Marcel Beyer’s novel of the same name. Her autobiographical graphic novel about an unusual three-way relationship, Wie ich versuchte, ein guter Mensch zu sein (Suhrkamp, 2017), was shortlisted for the Fauve d’or in Angoulême in 2018 and won an Inkpot Award at Comic-Con in San Diego. Part 1 of Die Frau als Mensch was released in spring 2025 and won the German Non-Fiction Book Prize 2025 — the first time a comic was nominated in this category.
Since September 2013, she has been a professor of Drawing & Comics at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Hanover.
