With twelve films from four genres, Genre Cinema from Germany aims to awaken the desire for genre film and provide insight into surprisingly diverse trends in German filmmaking. In 2023, one film per month will be presented from the genres of science fiction, crime, road movie and horror.
 

Science Fiction

In January 

HYPERLAND (Mario Sixtus, 2021)  
In Sixtus's dystopia of a near future, people's lives and social status are dependent on a digital rating system. While privacy no longer exists, the dynamics of a society completely controlled by social media come to a drastic head.

IN FEBRUARY 

World on a Wire (R. W. Fassbinder, 1973)
This early Fassbinder masterpiece tells of a scientist who researches a future in which people are programmed by computers, only to finally realize that he and those around him also owe their existence only to a simulation in the computer.

IN MARCH

Eolomea (Herrmann Zschoche, 1972) 
Science fiction classic from the GDR: Eight spaceships have disappeared without a trace, the connection to the orbital station "Margot" has been broken. Maria Scholl, head of the station "Earth-Center", suspects that the professor Olo Tal knows more about it.
 

crime films

IN APRIL

Free country  (Christian Alvart, 2020) 
Winter 1992, somewhere in the bleak expanses of northeast Germany: two police inspectors – one from the West, one from the East – are looking into the disappearance of two girls and end up sinking into the mire of the formerly divided Germany. A thriller with a sense of history.

THE MASSACRE OF ANROECHTE (Hannah Dörr, 2020) 
Anroechte is the scene of a massacre as people are randomly beheaded. When detectives Konka and Walter investigate, they discover the dark side of the small town. An absurd crime film that plays with the conventions of the crime genre.

ECHO (Mareike Wegener, 2022) 
Detective Harder comes to the provincial town of Friedland to make a fresh start after a tragic mission. In Friedland the world is in order - or has been returned to order at least. But Friedland’s moor doesn't forget.

ALICE IN THE CITIES (Wim Wenders, 1974)
Philip Winter, a German journalist, meets Lisa and her nine-year-old daughter Alice, at an airport,. Out of necessity, Philip and Lisa become friends. Wim Wenders' road movie is about homelessness, the search for an identity and loneliness.

IN AUGUST

MISSION ULJA FUNK (Barbara Kronenberg, 2021)
When Ulja discovers that an asteroid is due to hit a village in Belarus in two days’ time, she knows what she has to do. A rapid road movie about a twelve-year-old scientist who takes off on a great journey with her classmate and a hearse.

IN SEPTEMBER

GERMANY JOURNEY (Wolfgang Ettlich, 2020)
A journey through time and East Germany, 30 years after reunification as well as the first trip that the director and cameraman undertook through the then newly collapsed GDR. A curious road trip has turned into a road movie as well as a document of time.

IN OCTOBER

THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI (Robert Wiene, 1920)
With the help of a sleepwalker, the diabolical Dr. Caligari terrorises a small town in northern Germany. This expressionist silent film classic is a unique work of art and helped German film to flourish in the early 1920s.

IN NOVEMBER

THE GERMAN CHAINSAW MASSACRE [A.K.A. BLACKEST HEART] (Christoph Schlingensief, 1990)
The news of the Wall's opening throws a West German butcher's family into an unrestrained bloodlust. Christoph Schlingensief stages the first hour of German reunification as a slaughter, moving between horror, trash and critical commentary.

ENDZEIT – EVER AFTER (Carolina Hellsgård, 2018)
Two years after zombies have overrun the earth, the German towns of Weimar and Jena are the last remains of human civilization. Two young women take a journey through post-apocalyptic Thuringia. ENDZEIT - EVER AFTER is a zombie film written, directed, shot and produced by women.
