Physical space is more than a backdrop; it is an active participant in the creative process. For the artist, the studio, the gallery, the artist residence space, or even the street becomes an extension of their practice—a vessel that both constrains and liberates. The interplay between artist and space shapes not only the work’s materiality but also its conceptual trajectory, inviting questions about how we negotiate the boundaries of creation. 

In this context, the artist's relationship to space mirrors the nuances of societal negotiations. Just as communities repurpose architecture to tell stories of resilience and adaptation, artists reinterpret their environments to reflect personal and collective truths. Residency programs—such as those highlighted in Residency Re-Sourced—stand as prime examples, offering spaces where cross-pollination of ideas fosters innovation. These programs serve as laboratories, where physicality, memory, and cultural exchange meld into artistic outputs. 

Equally pivotal is the tension between space as resource and space as limitation. For some, the luxury of a dedicated studio offers creative abundance; for others, constraints ignite ingenuity, forcing artists to reimagine what is possible within defined parameters. How does a sculptor without space approach the monumental? How does a digital artist confined to a physical studio reframe their practice?
