Call for Proposals: Landscape Design and Indigenous Planting Specialist
The Plant Library at the Goethe-Institut Nigeria is a relatively compact outdoor intervention with a gravel-finished planting area, circulation paths and planters on the floor and at the wall. We find a curated collection of indigenous herbs, medicinal plants, edible species, and culturally significant plants.
About the Goethe-Institut
The Goethe-Institut Nigeria is seeking a qualified landscape architect, landscape designer, horticultural specialist, or interdisciplinary team to design and implement a Plant Library at its institute on Victoria Island, Lagos.
The Plant Library will serve as a living resource that celebrates indigenous plants, traditional ecological knowledge, biodiversity, sustainability, and environmental education. The installation is intended to create an inviting and educational landscape experience for visitors, students, artists, researchers, and the wider community.

Project Overview
The project involves the transformation of an outdoor area identified in the Plant Library Layout prepared for the Goethe-Institut. The design area includes a gravel-finished planting zone. The proposed plant selections should focus on indigenous herbs, medicinal plants, edible species, pollinator-friendly plants, and culturally significant native vegetation.
The selected consultant will develop a concept and fully implement the Plant Library within the available project budget.
Scope of Work
The selected contractor shall provide:
- Plant Library Area and Existing Site Conditions
- The proposed Plant Library area is approximately 8.1 m × 3.2 m. The dimensions shall be verified on site by the contractor prior to design and implementation. A Auto-CAD drawing can be requested.
- The existing site conditions and structural elements shall be retained. Existing drainage systems, inspection chambers, drainage channels, utility connections, access routes and other existing installations shall not be altered, obstructed, covered or built over.
- The proposed design shall take full account of existing site levels, drainage, utilities and other fixed elements. Any supporting structures, planters or planting systems shall be designed and positioned accordingly.
- No structural modifications or alterations to existing building or site infrastructure shall be undertaken without the Client's prior written approval.
- Concept Design
- Site review based on the provided layout and site visit.
- Development of a Plant Library concept.
- Selection of suitable indigenous herbs and plants.
- Spatial arrangement and planting strategy.
- Recommendations for planter types, substrate, labeling, and maintenance.
- Design and integration of any required supporting structures, planting systems, screens or vertical planted elements, including their technical requirements and interfaces with the existing site.Suggestions for educational interpretation and visitor engagement.
The proposal should prioritize:
- Indigenous Nigerian herbs and plants.
- Medicinal and ethnobotanical species.
- Pollinator-supporting species.
- Climate-resilient and low-maintenance plants.
- Species with educational, cultural, ecological, or culinary value.
- Procurement of plants and materials.
- Supply of planters and planting medium where required.
- Design, supply and installation of all necessary supporting structures, frames, screens, trellises, fixing systems and other elements required for the proposed planting concept.
- Where a vertical planted screen is proposed to function as a visual screen/paravan to conceal the existing perimeter wall, the complete system—including supporting structure, planting system, planters, plants, irrigation, fixing and all necessary accessories—shall be included in the scope and professional fee.Installation and planting.
- Plant labeling and identification.
- Final site clean-up and handover.
- Final planting plan.
- Complete plant list with common and botanical names.
- Brief care and maintenance guide.
- Photographic documentation of completed installation work.
Design Objectives
Applicants are encouraged to propose a Plant Library that:
- Functions as a living educational collection.
- Highlights local biodiversity.
- Encourages environmental awareness and community engagement.
- Is visually attractive throughout the year.
- Can be maintained with limited resources.
- Utilizes sustainable and locally sourced materials wherever possible.
- Supports future programming, workshops, and educational activities at the Goethe-Institut.
Available Budget
Maximum Total Project Budget: EUR 3,000 net (excluding VAT)
Payments will be made in Naira based on the current SAP currency exchange rate.
The budget must include:
- Design and concept development
- Professional fees
- Procurement of plants
- Planters and other materials
- Installation costs and planting works
- Transportation and logistics
- Documentation and plant labeling
- All other costs necessary for the complete implementation of the project
- Proposals exceeding the maximum budget will not be considered.
Submission Requirements
Please submit:
- Company Profile, Relevant Experience and Portfolio: Please provide a brief company profile/CV and selected relevant completed projects (maximum 5 pages), including the client name, project location, budget, and year of completion for each project.
- Project approach and preliminary concept – maximum 2 pages, including a preliminary plant palette
- Budget proposal – including all fees, plants, materials, installation, transportation and other associated costs.
- Proposed implementation schedule.
Selection
The selection will be based on the quality and suitability of the proposed concept, the bidder’s relevant experience with tropical/West African planting, knowledge of locally appropriate and low-maintenance plant species, and the feasibility of implementation within the available budget of EUR 3,000 net.Proposed Schedule
