In the afternoon of October 21, 2020, Lagos City Hall on Lagos Island was stormed by mostly young people and partly set on fire. The Goethe-Institut, located on the fourth floor, was also largely destroyed and looted; some of the rooms burned out. This attack took place on the fringes of the originally peaceful demonstrations against the excessive use of force by the police in Nigeria's largest city and during the curfew imposed by the government.
Fortunately, none of our colleagues was in the premises at the time of the attack. Therefore, nobody was injured.
In the first few weeks after the attack, we focused on clearing up and assessing the damage done to the institute. We are currently working hard to ensure that our activities can resume gradually.
From the 9th of November, our team will resume work in the office spaces provided to us by our European partner institutes – Alliance Française de Lagos and British Council. Until then, we will continue to work from home. Enquiries will only be answered via mail. You can find the contact person for your enquiry on our website.
Our reception will also reopen in the premises of Alliance Française de Lagos on the 9th of November. Enquiries can be made in person between 2pm-4pm from Monday to Friday.
Examinations and registration for new courses have been temporarily suspended. For latest information about handover of certificates and other updates, please follow us on our social media channels or send a mail to one of our colleagues in the language department.
We are still actively working to support the Nigerian cultural scene. In September, we set up an emergency relief fund to support Nigerian cultural initiatives. We will continue to keep you up to date about our relief efforts and forthcoming digital events via our newsletter and social media channels.
We have also set up a German Corner in the library of Alliance Française de Lagos. Library users can access German language books from 10am-3pm on Mondays and Thursdays.
While we work hard to secure a new accommodation for the Goethe-Institut Lagos, we ask that you remain patient with us, as this will take some time. Thank you for your support and well-wishes!
Stay safe and best wishes from the entire team of Goethe-Institut Lagos.
