Materialising The Missionary Encounter © Goethe-Institut

Join us for an evening with researcher Benjamina Efua Dadzie at the Goethe-Institut library for Materialising the Missionary Encounter: Gifting and Collecting at the Church Missionary Society Abeokuta Mission in the 1840s and 1850s.

This seminar offers insight into the material remains of the Church Missionary Society (CMS)’s 19th-century Abeokuta mission, now held in a museum collection, and explores how missionaries gathered artefacts of the Egba people. It also contextualises the provenance of these objects through a combination of archival and object-based research.

Benjamina traces the networks of exchange between Egba chiefs and British missionaries, and the role of gifting, collecting, and conversion in shaping the Anglican CMS collection.

Benjamina Efua Dadzie is a PhD candidate at the Sainsbury Research Unit, University of East Anglia. Her work explores the intersections of art history, archaeology, and heritage across Africa and Europe.

This seminar is open to all. Please join us for an evening of research and reflection at the Goethe-Institut library.
