Listening Session
Press Play is een evenementenreeks van het Goethe-Institut Niederlande. In intieme luistersessies wordt een ruimte gecreëerd om samen naar popmuziek te luisteren en te praten over de context ervan in de popcultuur. De focus ligt op genres, hun invloeden, de wisselwerking tussen sub- en mainstream cultuur, politieke stromingen, maar ook thema's als ecologie, revolte, migratie en hoe deze tot uiting komen in popmuziek en popcultuur. Muzikanten, podcasters, DJ's en culturele makers uit de culturele scene in Amsterdam en daarbuiten worden uitgenodigd om een playlist te maken, die vervolgens tijdens een luistersessie gezamenlijk wordt beluisterd.
Naast de muziekmakers worden bezoekers gevraagd hun eigen kennis, meningen en gevoelens mee te nemen en te delen. Samen zullen we praten over verschillende manieren om naar popcultuur te kijken. Wat zijn de trends uit het verleden, de trends van nu of zelfs de trends van de toekomst? Is popcultuur een vooruitstrevende pionier om een betere wereld vorm te geven of slechts een spiegel van de samenleving? Of beide? Is er een wereldtaal met betrekking tot popcultuur en wat definieert die? Hoe worden transgressieve artiesten gezien?

MULTIFEMALE MEGAMIX (MFMM) is een onderzoeksproject en podcast opgericht in 2020 door Killian Butler en Michelle Parrott. Het onderzoek van MFMM is in grote lijnen gebaseerd op een gedeelde interesse in hyperconsumeerbare media en culturele trends, en de gesprekken die deze onderwerpen in hun sociale en culturele context ontketenen. De podcast is een platform dat een dialoog opent over de mogelijkheden om esthetiek, massamedia en nieuwe mediacultuur vanuit verschillende invalshoeken te deconstrueren, gesitueerd in onze huidige omgeving en geleefde ervaring.

Ter voorbereiding op Press Play hebben Michelle en Killian urenlang naar muziek geluisterd en gekeken naar de import en export van muziek, muziekstijlen en trends. Ze luisterden bijvoorbeeld naar Tokio Hotel, Rollergirl, Eurovisie Songcontest winnares Lena Mayer-Landruth en veel Eurodance. Maar wat de playlist voor de allereerste luistersessie van Press Play bevat, kom je pas te weten als je komt.

Press Play is a series of events organized by the Goethe-Institut Netherlands in the form of listening sessions, where an intimate space is created to listen to pop music collectively and talk about its context in popular culture. There will be a focus on genres, their influences, the interplay between sub- and mainstream culture, political movements, but also topics such as ecology, revolt, migration and how these are reflected in pop music and pop culture. Musicians, podcasters, DJs and cultural practitioners from the cultural scene in Amsterdam and beyond are invited to create a playlist that will be played during a listening session of Press Play.
While special guests are invited to bring their playlist, visitors are asked to bring and share their own knowledge, opinions, feelings in order to exchange thoughts on different ways of looking at pop culture. What are the trends of the past, the trends of the present and the trends of the future? Is pop culture a progressive pioneer for shaping a better world or just a mirror of society? Both? Is there a global language in relation to pop culture and what defines it? How are transgressive artists perceived?
The first guests to be invited are the Amsterdam-based podcast Multifemale Megamix.
MULTIFEMALE MEGAMIX (MFMM) is a research project and podcast founded by Killian Butler and Michelle Parrott in 2020. MFMM's research is broadly based on a shared interest in hyper-consumable media and cultural trends, and the conversations these topics spark in their social and cultural environments. The podcast is a platform that opens a dialogue about the possibilities of deconstructing the aesthetics of mass media and new media culture from different perspectives situated in our current environment and lived experience.
In preparation for Press Play, Michelle and Killian spent hours listening to music and looking at the import and export of it, musical styles, and trends. They listened to Tokyo Hotel, Rollergirl, Lena Mayer-Landruth and Eurodance. But what the playlist for the very first listening session of Press Play consists of, you will only find out if you come.
