Vinyago means African spiritual masks in Swahili, the primary shared language in East Africa and is made up of a project series with different components. It aims to explore shared history between Tanzania and Germany through looking at masks that were collected during the German colonial time in Tanzania (1885 - 1918). Through public performances, panel discussions, an exhibition and a library, the project wishes to create awareness and give access to information, which is currently not easily available. In collaboration with researchers and by bringing together key role players from Tanzania and Germany, Vinyago furthermore aims at contributing to the latest debate on how African collections of European museums can be approached
