The Goethe-Institut e.V. is an intermediary organization of the Federal Republic of Germany which promotes the German language abroad, fosters international cultural cooperation, and conveys a comprehensive image of Germany by providing information about cultural, social, and political life. The Goethe-Institut Washington is the regional institute for North America.
Language Program Officer
Part-time (20 hours per week) – with the possibility to increase to full-time (up to 40 hours per week) based on performance and business needs.
Target start date: 09/01/2024 or as soon as possible
Responsibilities:
- Organizational support for the regional language management of the Goethe-Institut North America
- Regional queries, monitoring and coordination of projects, and conceptual support
- Carrying out administrative tasks (including but not limited to: flight and hotel bookings, pre-accounting, travel expense accounting, appointment coordination, materials management, etc.)
- Research, editing, and minor translation work
- Organizational preparation and follow-up for local and regional meetings, maintenance of the language department's internal local and regional communication channels
- Event organization (such as conferences, career days, receptions, etc.)
- Support with project management using internal IT-based tools (budget management)
- Coordination of regional scholarship management
- Communication with local and international partners (such as schools, German teacher associations, education authorities, etc.) in German and English
- Participation in language public relations (such as maintenance and support of contributions from the language department in newsletters, websites, portals, social media channels, support of the event calendar, etc.)
Requirements:
- Relevant university degree
- Very good written and spoken German and English
- Very good IT skills in Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, Microsoft 365, SAP)
- Experience in event management / financial processing (experience in project management desirable)
- Experience in using project planning software and IT-based tools (high degree of familiarity with the institute's own planning tools desirable or willingness to familiarize yourself with them)
- Friendly and confident demeanor, high level of communication skills
- Strong organizational skills
- High degree of independence, ability to work in a team, and flexibility
The Goethe-Institut offers an engaging and multi-faceted position in an intercultural environment. The focus of your duties may vary, and you may be asked to take on additional tasks in consultation with the Language Director. Compensation is based on the Goethe-Institut Washington's salary schedule.
We offer an attractive benefits package, including health insurance and short-term disability insurance (for employees who work at least 30 hours per week). After 6 months of employment, all employees are eligible to contribute to a 401(K) plan. This position offers a hybrid work model with the opportunity to work remotely up to two days per week, subject to supervisor approval. Physical presence at the Institute is expected at least three working days per week.

Salary Range: $31,626 - $32,580 (20 hours per week)
