What we focus on

  • Just Society

    A just society is rooted in participation, identity, and the reduction of inequality. The Goethe-Institut promotes dialogue on social transformation, integration, and the effects of global crises—sparking new ideas for an open and inclusive future through collaboration with local and international partners.

  • Migration and Social Change

    The Goethe-Institut examines migration as a global force shaping societies. By highlighting historical and contemporary perspectives, it fosters dialogue on identity, belonging, and social transformation — especially within transatlantic contexts.

  • Memory Culture

    Memory is a contested space that shapes identity and belonging. Through exhibitions, projects, and educational initiatives, the Goethe-Institut reexamines historical responsibility and remembrance—offering fresh, transatlantic perspectives on how the past is understood today.

  • Sustainability

    Guided by the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, the Goethe-Institut advances global justice, inclusion, and peace through interconnected initiatives—contributing to a more equitable, sustainable, and peaceful world.

    Our nationwide campaign to celebrate and strengthen transatlantic friendship organizes programs all over the country – not just in cities where you may already know “your” Goethe-Institut. No matter where you are: If you're interested in cultural exchange, have personal or professional ties to Germany, or simply want to discover something new, you’re warmly invited to join us.

  • EUNIC initiative

    The Art of Freedom

    The Art of Freedom is an initiative of the EUNIC Cluster Washington, D.C., with the participation of the Goethe-Institut Washington. The program brings together European and American voices to explore freedom, art, and democratic dialogue.

  • #Memory Culture

    “Monuments of the Future?” card set

    Current debates about memorial culture in urban space call for new educational formats that encourage young people to engage with their immediate surroundings. In this context the Goethe-Institut Washington created the “Monuments of the Future?” card set that can be downloaded or borrowed free of charge.
