From July 6 to August 11, the section of Vabaduse Avenue in Tartu was free of cars and was transformed into a pleasant oasis where the citizens could relax, play, enjoy various events – or ride their bikes safely!

Next to many great perfomers from Estonia as well as from abroad, the CYCLE UP! artist-in-residence in Tartu, Jana de Troyer, hosted her events there.

Serving as a perfect example of an alternative, more pedestrian and bike friendly use of public space, the car-free avenue was visited by the participating decision-makers during the CYCLE UP! Tartu mid-point workshop. In a panel discussion with the organisers, the decision-makers have learnt all the details about bringing such a transformation to a major traffic route in the city of Tartu.

The Tartu 2024 car-free avenue is a part of the European Capital of Culture Tartu 2024 main programme.
