Graphic Novels in the DaF Classroom: Discovering Language, History, and Democracy in anew
By combining text and images, graphic novels create a unique learning experience and open up new possibilities for engaging and reflective language teaching. Using the graphic novel Sophie Scholl as an example, Jennie Dahl demonstrates how language learning can be meaningfully connected with historical education, democratic values, and the development of civic courage.

In this hands-on workshop, she will share insights into her award-winning teaching project and present practical methods, materials, and writing activities that encourage students to reflect, discuss, and express themselves in the target language. Participants will discover how graphic novels can boost motivation, make historical topics more accessible, and support the development of language skills in a meaningful and lasting way.

For this innovative teaching concept, Jennie Dahl was awarded Sweden’s Most Innovative Teaching Idea 2026.

Join us for an inspiring session and explore the potential of graphic novels for modern, relevant, and engaging GfL teaching.
