Literature opens up new perspectives, encourages critical reflection, and creates authentic opportunities for communication. But how can it be used effectively in the German language classroom?

In this session, we will explore the topic of literature in German language teaching and discover a variety of practical ways to bring literary texts into the classroom. Together, we will look at recent articles from the Goethe-Institut’s magazine #DeutschlandNoFilter covering the Frankfurt Book Fair, as well as related teaching materials and lesson ideas available on Deutschstunde.
Together with an editor from #DeutschlandNoFilter, we will take a retrospective look at this year’s Frankfurt Book Fair and the magazine’s coverage of the event. We will discuss the shortlist for the German Book Prize and explore how the nominated works reflect current social developments, political debates, and contemporary issues in Germany and beyond.
Alongside the presentation of teaching materials and practical classroom ideas, the session will focus on exchanging experiences and perspectives: What opportunities does literature offer in language teaching? Which approaches have proven successful in practice? And how can contemporary literary topics motivate learners to read, speak, reflect, and engage in meaningful discussion?

Join us for fresh inspiration, practical teaching ideas, and an opportunity to connect with colleagues on the role of literature in German language education.
