How can German language teaching contribute to the development of democratic competences?
What role do multilingualism, cultural diversity and social participation play in this context?
And what does it mean not only to teach democratic values, but also to put them into practice in the classroom?

To mark the 40th anniversary of the Swiss professional association AkDaF, the 19th edition of Thinking DACH Together: Professional Associations in Dialogue explores these and other questions from the perspective of German as a Foreign and Second Language (DaF/DaZ).

The discussion is based on the Reference Framework of Competences for Democratic Culture (2023) developed by the Council of Europe. Against the backdrop of current social and political challenges, we will reflect on the contribution language education can make to fostering dialogue, responsibility and civic participation, and on the opportunities this opens up for classroom practice as well as for the initial and continuing professional development of DaF/DaZ teachers.

Following an introductory keynote by Prof. Dr. Liana Konstantinidou (ZHAW) on the framework and the democratic model underpinning it, we will explore its relevance for DaF/DaZ in a collegial discussion with Dr. Mi-Cha Flubacher (ZHAW).
Participants will then be invited to engage with the ideas presented in moderated breakout groups, share their own experiences and perspectives, and discuss practical approaches for the classroom and beyond.

We look forward to a lively and open exchange with teachers, researchers, teacher educators, professional development providers, and all others interested in the field of DaF/DaZ.
