August 1992: For several days, angry citizens rage in front of the Sunflower House in Roststock Lichtenhagen. Refugees are housed in the house, which is painted with sunflowers.
Neither politics nor the police take responsibility; only much too late is an evacuation of the Sunflower House considered. The first Molotov cocktail flies. The overtaxed police withdraw and the situation escalates.
In Burhan Qurbani's film Wir sind jung Wir sind stark. we accompany a group of young people before and during the riots. The bored youths get infected by the dangerous group dynamics and become more and more radicalized. The film impressively shows the social problems in reunified Germany in the 1990s. Lack of perspective and an uncertain future overshadow the young people's newly won freedom after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
