Ulrich Gutmair is editor for political books and politics at taz. He studied history and journalism at the Free University of Berlin. In his debut Die ersten Tage von Berlin: Der Sound der Wende (The First Days of Berlin: The Sound of Change, 2013), he describes how squatters, artists, DJs and ravers created a temporary autonomous zone in Berlin-Mitte after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Wir sind die Türken von morgen. Neue Welle, neues Deutschland (We Are the Turks of Tomorrow: New Wave, New Germany, 2023) describes punk as an aesthetic attitude that counters nationalism, racism and sexism with negation, provocation and satire.
