Helmut Böttiger, born 1956, studied German language and literature as well as history in Freiburg. He was chief literary editor and cultural correspondent for the Frankfurter Rundschau, and since 2002 has worked as a freelance author, literary critic and essayist. In 2013, he received the Leipzig Book Fair Prize in the nonfiction category for his book Die Gruppe 47. Böttiger is also holder of the Alfred Kerr Prize, which he was awarded in 2012.
