Avin Abdulkariem is a bus driver in Berlin – with passion and conviction. The native Iraqi has already motivated many women with her choice of profession.

... was born in the Iraqi city of Mosul. Her family fled to Germany in 1994, when she was a young girl. Since 2016, Avin has been working as a bus driver for the Berlin public transport company. She trained for six months at a private driving school.

Germany's largest public transport company operates the underground, tram, bus and ferry services in Berlin, as well as the mobility app Jelbi. The bus fleet has about 1,500 vehicles, and the team includes about 3,800 people. Among other things, driving licence class D95 is a prerequisite to work as a bus driver for Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe.

There is a lack of skilled workers in Germany. Many people therefore come to Germany to work here. In which professions do they work? What does their working life look like? In the series #MyJob we introduce some of these people – and their everyday working life.
