Knietzsche and Grief

Primary School (9-11 years)

IPST Education Award 2021

Focus Theme:
2021 Health and Wellbeing

Just as death is part of life, grief is part of saying goodbye. Knietzsche thinks it should be talked about so that everyone knows that all feelings are okay. Grief is like an animal that moves in with you and changes you. You can be as limp as a snail or as angry as a wild tiger. How long your grief animal lives with you, no one knows. But at some point it will move out again and leave behind beautiful memories. Knietzsche is the smallest philosopher in the world. One of his favorite things to do is think, but he's also great at explaining. The form of the animated series is perfect for philosophizing with children: You can put aside the limitations of reality, draw crazy comparisons and spin bold thought experiments. Happiness, death, justice or good and evil - his reflections on the big questions of life give rise to smiles, reflection and discussion. Knietzsche explains complex topics in such a way that children quickly find accessible. In consideration of the impact Covid-19 has had on so many families and children having to cope with grief and mental health as a key thematic focus of the Science Film Festival in 2021, the international jury wishes to recognize this animated children's series for tackling such difficult topics with this age group.
