The Swedish government decided on the 14th of December 2023 to appoint a special investigation with the task of reviewing the subject of Swedish as a second language and how heritage language education effects student’s integration.
The results of the investigation were published in the beginning of 2025. They show: students who choose the heritage language subject generally perform better at school than students who are eligible for the subject but do not take it.

The debate about mother tongue education is highly relevant in Sweden at the moment, as there is currently a government investigation initiated by the right-wing populist party Sweden Democrats questioning the provision of mother tongue education in Swedish municipalities. Our partners from Uppsala, together with other HLE centres in various municipalities, have written a debate article in Sweden's largest daily newspaper Svenska Dagbladet (6th December 2024) in which they highlight the many benefits of mother tongue education for the development of multilingual children.
