Greece is a country where Heritage Language Education is by no means approached in formal education, with the exception of very few initiatives which have been either implemented in the framework of research programs or based on school principals’ personal efforts.

The heritage language - or mother tongue - of a young learner is the main road to achieving knowledge and a balanced mind. Blocking this main road leads to unnecessary distress and delays.

Sabine is the project manager of “Your Language Counts!”. She has been working on the idea from the very beginning and brought the project to fruition.

„In many European countries, school classrooms and communities are becoming increasingly diverse. The variety of languages that our pupils bring with them from ‘home’ is an enormous resource that can make a lasting difference in our educational landscape and language learning. With the “Your Language Counts!” project, we want to share good practices with experts and teachers and support educational stakeholders across Europe in offering heritage language teaching in school.“

Special investigation Sweden: positive influence of HLE

The Swedish government decided on the 14th of December 2023 to appoint a special investigation with the task of reviewing the subject of Swedish as a second language and how heritage language education effects student’s integration.

The results of the investigation were published in the beginning of 2025. They show: students who choose the heritage language subject generally perform better at school than students who are eligible for the subject but do not take it.

Debate Article: Svenska Dagbladet

The debate about mother tongue education is highly relevant in Sweden at the moment, as there is currently a government investigation initiated by the right-wing populist party Sweden Democrats questioning the provision of mother tongue education in Swedish municipalities. Our partners from Uppsala, together with other HLE centres in various municipalities, have written a debate article in Sweden's largest daily newspaper Svenska Dagbladet (6th December 2024) in which they highlight the many benefits of mother tongue education for the development of multilingual children.
